Sheffield’s Industrial Elegance: The interior at Eagle Works
Whilst Eagle Works might appear unremarkable from the outside, the interior tells a completely different story. Built in the 1950s, the building sat at the heart of a world-renowned steelmaking complex in Sheffield’s industrial heartland. It was historically associated with John Martin Moorwood Ltd, a respected roll manufacturer, before the business was acquired by Davy Roll in 1962. Proper Sheffield industry, built to last.
Unlike many modern office developments that lean on glass, plasterboard and uniform finishes, Eagle Works comes from a time when workplaces were built with permanence and pride. Marble surfaces, forged steelwork and generous architectural proportions give the building real weight and presence. It’s an industrial workspace with a sense of scale and material richness that’s rare in contemporary offices. The communal areas carry that distinctive blend of grit and grandeur you just don’t find in newer blocks.
Inside, several of the original features really stand out. A grand staircase creates a strong focal point, clad floor-to-ceiling in marble. Hand-crafted, locally forged steel bannisters nod to the building’s manufacturing roots and sit right at the heart of the space. A huge mural captures the steel-tapping process — molten metal pouring from a furnace into a ladle while workers in protective gear guide the flow, ready for the crane to carry it across to the moulds.
When you book a shoot at Zavod Studio, you’re not just getting the main studio — you’ve also got access to the shared communal spaces. Proper industrial surroundings inside a former working factory, now home to Sheffield’s independents, makers and small businesses. We’re proud to play our part in keeping the place alive and in use.
If you’re planning to shoot in the communal spaces, dress comfortably and be mindful of the other businesses based here. The areas are accessible throughout the day and are suitable for shoots up to fashion-level. Pockets of natural light are available within these spaces; however, we suggest bringing your own battery-powered lighting for darker corners.
As this is a shared working building, things move around and access to specific areas can’t be guaranteed. If you’d rather have a bit more space and fewer folk about, weekend afternoons are usually your best bet.
